A 2016 Whistler Independent Book Award finalist.
Former homicide investigator Hunter Rayne follows the white lines northward on the Alaska Highway, but a truck breakdown forces him to take an unscheduled stop in Whitehorse, Yukon, where he had been stationed as a rookie cop. While his Freightliner is awaiting repairs, Hunter and fellow driver, Dan (Sorry) Sorenson, kill time with a side trip to bush Alaska where a chance meeting with a young Alaskan woman awakens his interest in a baffling cold case. A reclusive trapper and his young girlfriend disappeared from a bloody cabin 25 years before, leaving their sled dogs chained outside.
Reawakened memories of his past coupled with a recent murder find Hunter back in investigative mode with the blessings of Whitehorse RCMP boss Bartholomew Sam, son of a shaman and Hunter's old friend. He finds himself searching the banks of the mighty Yukon River for a tough old bush woman who may hold the key to more than one bloody death. It's a vivid reminder that the breathtaking beauty of the northern wilderness camouflages its brutal indifference to human life.
This is the fourth novel in the Highway Mysteries series of character-driven traditional mysteries in a uniquely North American setting.

Hunter Rayne is a former RCMP homicide investigator turned long-haul trucker who just can’t give up his crime-solving ways. In book 4 of this series, a truck breakdown leads to him solving a long-cold case that brings up a lot of painful memories for him.I very much enjoy this series. The characters ring true for me, even the secondary ones – it’s almost as if the author was a former RCMP/now truck driver. I liked learning more about Rayne and what makes him tick I’m fascinated by the dichotomy of The Job wearing him out but being something that is so ingrained in his DNA that he can’t really let go. The settings are well described. I felt like I was in the truck with Rayne, watching the miles roll by. There was one scene involving violence to a dog that almost made me metaphorically pitch the book, but I was on a treadmill using my Kindle at the time. The violence was brief, and took place off-screen, and was organic to the plot – not plain mean or manipulative. And I’m glad I stuck it out – there was a happy ending for the dog, as well as the plot.
If you enjoy traditional mysteries, I’d give this one a go. They are, of course, better in order, but you could read out of order and not feel lost as with some series.

Sundown on Top of the World A Hunter Rayne Highway Mystery Book 4 eBook RE Donald Reviews
This is the fourth book in this series. I found it tedious, and at times difficult to follow. I've noticed this happens with authors who write series books. They don't always hit a home run. I picked the book up, put it down, picked it up put it down several times. The previous books were so engaging I had difficulty stopping to do chores. There were a few too many subplots for my tastes. I sometimes had to re-read whole passages to understand what was written. Having said that, I am looking forward to the next in the series. I suggest you definitely begin with book one if you are new to the series. Don't start with this one.
The basic premise for the series lends itself well to varied locales and interesting situations. The main character is a decent person, surrounded some some character friends, including a somewhat ninja cat belonging to his landlord.
As I'm somewhat familiar with the areas written about thus far, I like that they are described accurately. They aren't just names or places pulled off a map and used as filler. Having an author write about a place you know well, and doing it right, is like having a little personal gift in the story.
The stories are stand alone, but have more continuity if read as a series.
Most of the book is filled with geographical descriptions and soul-searching by the main characters. Various plot threads predictably resolved in the last few chapters. I found myself skipping lots of pages, hoping for some excitement!
I'm sorry to say I was disappointed with this one. I almost felt as if someone else ghosted the story because it did not hold my interest as the others I have read did. I found myself skipping a lot of pages. often. Something I didn't do in earlier books in this series. It was much more a study of what was going on inside of the characters' heads, lengthy descriptions of scenery, a lot of unnecessary rehashing and not a lot about the plot. And I, too, found his friend Sorry to by very annoying. He should have matured more at this point of the series. There could have been so many reasons he was between jobs besides getting fired for being an obnoxious jerk. Hopefully the next book in the series will get back on track because the author does write well and the editing is good. Having a truck driver who is on the road most of the time and has deadlines to meet has got to make it very difficult to come up with believable plots.
I really enjoyed the actual story here, but I am just giving it 3 stars due to all the extra
things added and repeated through out the book. Characters musings, things about the past,
Scenery galore. As other reviewers have mentioned the same things I won't go on about it.
This is My first book in this series that I have read, so the background came in handy for me.
It is a stand alone book. It really takes off more around chapter 8 or so, that is when I finally got
into it and had a hard time putting it down, but I did do some lite skimming past some things
that had nothing to do with the actual story line and mystery getting solved. I was glad I kept with it
and finished the book... it was good and I will look into getting some of the others in this series.
From reading other reviews I read that some of the books in this series before this one did not have
allot of filler things like this one does, so I will check them out, I do like this authors writing.
And very few typos which I really liked.
NO SEX, DOES HAVE BAD LANGUAGE
I recommend it... Happy reading
This was a good story as all the others in the series are, full of twists and turns. But it drags more than they did due to too many words devoted to describing scenery, a character’s emotions and thoughts, and backstory. Long introspective passages from the primary characters didn’t help.
Rayne’s best friend Dan’s behavior throughout most of the book was annoying. Rayne describes him at one point as acting like a petulant teen instead of a grown man with responsibilities.
Late in the book, Rayne and his friend in the RCMP finally ask the questions they should have asked when Rayne’s curiosity about the unsolved crime first stirred.
Readers want to see the bad guy being caught. Donald doesn’t show us that, only tells us about it in a conversation between Rayne and another character.
So this in some ways wasn’t really a mystery, more of a character study of the primary characters.
Still, I like this series that I’ll be back for more.
